NOTES

Words cant describe the importance of this album for
metal. Any black metal band in existence should lick the
boots of everyone that was involved with this CD, bow
down to their knees whenever they see one of these guys
and say Hail Celtic Frost.

These songs were written circa 1984/1985, two years or so
before the thrash explosion of 86. Absolutely mandatory!

Manegarm-Nattvasen-SE-2009-GRAVEWISH

Artist: Mnegarm
Album: Nattvsen
Year: 2009
Rel. Date: 2009-11-27
Genre: Metal
Label: Regain Records
Source: CD
Type: Album
Encoder: LAME 3.97
Quality: VBR, 44.1kHz, Joint Stereo

The band started from the ideas of Svenne
Rosendal, Jonas Almquist, and Pierre Wilhelmsson
in 1995. After securing another guitarist in
Mrten Matsson and a drummer in Erik Grawsi, they
began rehearsing as Antikrist. By 1996, they had
changed their name to Mnegarm, after the vampire
wolf of Norse legend, apt for a band concentrating
on Viking metal, and early that year, they began
recording first demo Vargaresa (Wolfs Journey) in
1996. After the recording, Rosendal and Matsson
left to be replaced by Jonny Wranning (vocals) and
Markus And (guitar). With the second demo, Ur
Nattvindar, folk metal became part of their sound,
including violins and female vocals for the first
time, and they were signed by Displeased Records.
Soon afterwards, Wranning left the band and was
replaced by Viktor Hemgren. At the end of the
year, they went back into Sunlight studios to
record their first full-length album,
Nordstjrnans Tidslder (The Age of the
Northstar). In the summer of 1999, they began
recording their next album, Havets Vargar. Because
of some difficulty with the recording studio, they
took some time off from recording the album.
During this time off, Viktor Hemgren was fired,
but instead of finding a new vocalist, Grawsi
assumed the duties along with his drumming. Also
during this time, Janne Liljekvist was added as a
full member. With the line up now solidified, they
finished recording the album and released it in
2000. The bands two demos were remastered and
released as an album in 2004, with fourth studio
album Vredens Tid (Age of Wrath) issued in 2005,
followed by performances on the European festival
circuit that summer. After one further EP on
Displeased, a completely-acoustic folk music EP,
Urminnes Hvd (The Forest Sessions), the band
moved to Swedish label Black Lodge, who issued the
groups sixth album, Vargstenen (Wolf Stone) in
2007. This seventh album is released on November
2009 via Regain Records, enjoy!

Imhotep Review :
The circle is complete, back to basics then. Did this
thought strike Dimmu Borgir when they chose to re-record
the second full-length album Stormblast? Or maybe they
were thinking of their fans, giving these an easier
solution to complete their Dimmu Borgir album collection?
Or perhaps the reason was much simpler as Silenoz said:
We like to have dinners at Peter Tagtgrens place!
Thus, Dimmu Borgir travelled to Abyss studio in Sweden to
re-record their second full-length release. The first
change appears already in the beginning! The beautiful
piano-intro from the original Stormblast is missing and
were plunged headlong into Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen. In
the next song, the structure seems to be similar, but it
is played slightly faster than the original. The track
has got more dynamics; some keyboard details are left out
with the result that the vocals are more in focus. On the
other hand, the excellent piano piece in Nar Sjelen
Hentes Til Helvete carries Mustis signature technique
and will force the listener to repeat the song over and
over again. A sad thing considering Mustis creativity
must be the original song Sorgens Kammer, a track that
they couldnt do in the re-release, most likely due to
copyrights. The result is Sorgens Kammer - Del II,
which is an utterly new song with a marvelous combination
of rhythmic guitars, drums and easy keyboard lines linked
together. These elements intertwine with Shagraths
consistent vocals. Despite the technically great features
of the song, it fully fits the simplicity of the
re-recorded album as a whole. Another obvious change is
the drumming. The sound and technique is very different
from what we were accustomed to with Tjodalv or Nicholas.
The drums have a velvet sound, and this aspect
contributes to the atmosphere of this re-recording in
form of a cryptic tranquillity. No wonder then, that we
can spot the distinct Hellhammer-patterns on the drums!
The guitar sound proves what can come out of Abyss
typical slightly distorted sound in combination with the
thick woolly sound of Engl amplifiers. If based only on
the mentioned triple combination, this re-release would
receive a very high ranking. However, the somewhat foggy
sound of Vinder Fra En Ensom Grav on the original
release has the atmosphere of a mystic Norwegian forest,
for some puritan black metal fans it will remain an
essential element.

Rippers Notes :
This release is a completely re-recorded version of the
original 1996 album.
The song Antikrist has some lyrical changes from the
original release. Instead of rape the christians women
and children, they sing maim the christians women and
children.
The second disc is a DVD featuring their stunning Ozzfest
performance (2004).

Release Notes:

Re-released on CD as part of the Microcosmos
Limited Edition Box Set by Season
of Mist.

Drudkh is a folk influenced black metal unit
hailing from Ukraine. They have released 6 full
length albums in a 5 year span with Anti Urban
being released as a limited EP in 2007. Containing
two new tracks and just coming in at 18 minutes,
this is not a very long album yet when you put it
on it tends to last longer than the actual
duration. In a good way though. On this EP, Drudkh
strip down their folk influenced black metal sound
and create an album full of drone atmosphere and
buzzing riffs. They have dropped the keyboards and
standard folk instrumentation common to their
previous albums, only relying on the guitar and
drums to create an in depth and challenging
listen. With each track averaging around the 9
minute mark, Drudkh manage to waste no time in
getting started.

The first track, Ashes is a purely instrumental
track driven by mesmerizing guitar riffs and
rocking drum beats. The guitar work displays raw
emotion with catchy slow tempo riffs that grind
their way into the listeners ears. The second
tracks displays the same tone in riff structure
and drum patterns but soon treads back to familiar
Drudkh territory with deep guttural vocals that
seem to echo from miles away. Anti Urban is fit
with the standard production of the band with a
low fi and heavily atmospheric approach . The
production has always worked with Drudkhs sound
and continues to benefit their music.

In short, if youre a fan of Drudkh or black metal
in general this is definitely worth checking out.
Although at this point it might be hard to find
due to its limited pressing. You might have to
download this EP to add to your collection but
its a worthy addition at that.
