Release notes

BLOODBATH are more known for their members than their
music. The fact that Dan Swan (guitar), Peter Tgtgren
(vocals), Jonas Renske (bass), Anders Nystrm (guitar)
and Martin Axe Axenrot (drums) are all well known
names in the Metal community, shouldnt make you think
that this is only a project to rip some off the fans.
This is instead very good Death Metal album that grows
upon you. On their first full length (Breeding Death
being their first release, a 3 track mini-CD on Century
Media), Resurrection Through Carnage, they had
another famous vocalist behind the microphone, his
name was Mikael kerfeldt and should be known for many
as the main man in OPETH. As BLOODBATHs debut was a
bit more old-school, Mikael kerfeldts vocals fitted
like a glow. I dont want to compare Mikael and Peters
contributions, because its two rather different albums
and therefore the different vocal styles suit the
albums theyre found on.

The music on Nightmares Made Flesh are far more
modern and the blast beats that starts the album shows
you right away that BLOODBATH has headed for another
direction within the same territory. They dont sound
that Swedish anymore, which is of course bullshit
since every member comes from Sweden, but Im sure you
know what I mean. The guitars dont have that late 80s
early 90s sound to it, in fact it sound a little more
digital, not that I can explain you exactly what I
mean, but there is like a digital edge to the guitar
sound. I also want to mention the lyrics, which are
very good, they all deal with typical Death Metal
themes such as war, disease, doomsday and such, but
they are written in a way that makes sure they are
interesting to read. Some of the lyrics are just gore
related, while a song like Eaten is based upon an
actual story. The story behind this song is about a
German cannibal who advertised after people that he
could eat. And it should come as no surprise that
someone actually sent him a yes. Before the victim
was taken away they ate his penis in companion, a
rather sick story that suits perfect as a Death Metal
lyric.

As we have come to except from Swedish bands the
production is very good and anyone interested in Death
Metal knows that all the members of BLOODBATH are
masters at work. Peter Tgtgren does a really good job
and shows which kind of register he have, he has like
4-5 different extreme vocal types and his screams are
fucking unbelievable. I dont understand how its
possible to scream like he does at the end of the song
Soul Evisceration, but it only proves that Peter
Tgtgren is among the best vocalists Extreme Metal has
to offer. There are some very good solos found on
Nightmares Made Flesh and some of them are
unmistakably Dan Swan. Its good to hear a band that
lets every member show his strongpoint without trying
to dominate the sound.

The first time I listened to Nightmares Made Flesh
the song Eaten became my favourite song right away.
Its one of the albums slowest songs, but dont think
that makes it less powerful. Its a really good song
that also contains some amazing guitar
solosharmonies. After the first listen Eaten was
the song I remembered and I thought that the record was
a bit disappointing, but a few more spins made me
discover that there was more to this record than just
Eaten. The songs Cancer Of The Soul, Brave New
Hell, Outnumbering The Days, Draped In Disease and
the aforementioned Eaten are my favourite songs on
Nightmares Made Flesh. Even though I pick out these
songs as my favourites, it must be mentioned that
Nightmares Made Flesh are a record that holds very
good quality as long as it lasts. So if you are into
Death Metal and like the work of those involved, you
should be prepared for a record that takes the best of
each individual and mixes it into a Death Metal record
that will stand the test of time. (Online January 22,
